Size matters when it comes to the approach Philip and Lesley Tout have towards their business. Their Esso-branded site in Nailsea, Bristol was the overall winner at the Forecourt Trader of the Year awards ceremony at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, in September. The judges comments included the words 'big, bold and beautiful', and when meeting the Touts for this post-awards interview, Philip agrees they don't do things by halves: "The bigger the better," he confirms. "It's easier being bigger. We've had small garages in the past, but now we're only interested in something that's really good. If it wasn't we wouldn't keep it. After all it's as hard to run a small site as it is to run a big one - you still have the same things to do, but the rewards are less."

And to ensure it's more than a 'Quantum of Solace', you need to make sure your entry is as good as it can be.

Launched in 2006, The Top 50 Indies is an annual countdown of the UK's biggest independent fuel retailing groups.

The key measure is number of sites operated by the group, followed by annual fuel volume, then annual turnover of the whole of the petrol retailing business.

The publication of the listing is celebrated with a special evening event - The Top Indies Dinner - which this year is being held at the Hilton Metropole, Birmingham, on Monday, April 7, 2008. The evening commences at 7.30pm with a champagn reception followed by a three-course dinner. Highlight of the evening include two guest speakers.

The event offers fantastic networking opportunities with around 250 leading industry professionals. It also coincides with the annual International Firecourt and Fuel Equipment Show (April 6th-9th).

Tickets are £130+VAT or £1,250+VAT for a table of 10 guests.

The Brocklehursts have always liked to be first. So when Karl Brocklehurst stepped up to collect the industry's highest accolade at the Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards, the family business was right where it likes to be - firmly in the limelight.
