A Morrisons forecourt in Kent was closed on Wednesday 13 April after the main store was struck by lightning.

Fire fighters, along with Kent Police and ambulances, were called to the store in Ten Perch Road to investigate reports the main building had been struck twice by lightning and was filled with smoke.

The store and petrol station were immediately evacuated following the incident, at around 3.45pm, and fire fighters isolated the petrol pumps.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “We were made aware by Secamb just before 4pm today that lightning had struck a building in Ten Perch Road, Wincheap. Officers attended to assist at the scene with crowd control.”

A South East Coast Ambulance spokesman said two women, who were assessed at the scene, were taken to Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

They are not believed to have suffered serious injuries and were taken to be checked over by doctors. One reportedly collapsed following the strikes.

The site was reopened at around 5.45pm.
