Three thieves were forced to flee empty-handed after a bungled attempt to steal a cash machine from a garage forecourt.

The gang used a stolen Mercedes car transporter to lift the machine off the ground at Thurnby Garage, Uppingham Road, Leicester, in the raid, which took place just after midnight.

Police believe the gang’s intention was to try and lift the machine out of the ground using the heavy car transporter. Fortunately they were unable to shift the machine at all, but managed to cause extensive damage before giving up completely and fleeing on foot.
