Asda has decided that all contractors working on its forecourts must carry safety passports.

Clive Johnson, health and safety manager for Asda retail development, said: "We want to raise the bar on health and safety, and the adoption of safety passports ensures that visiting contractors have the best training available."

According to the Warwickshire-based Safety Pass Alliance (SPA), contractors and their employees will get safety passports by attending a two-day course developed by the SPA. The passport is valid for three years and lets contractors working on forecourts show they are aware of specific health and safety issues.

Ray Gibbs, SPA managing director, said: "Large companies such as BP, Texaco, Shell, and Total adopted the scheme some time ago. Now a growing number of business sectors in the UK are embracing safety passport schemes to help reduce accidents and improve efficiency in their companies. We are delighted Asda is the first supermarket to recognise the importance of our safety passports."
