Inhabitants of Aviemore in the Highlands of Scotland have started a Facebook campaign to get a Tesco forecourt in the town, in a bid to bring down the price of fuel there.
Called Aviemore Wants a Tesco Fuel Station, the Facebook site was created by Newtonmore businessman Ruaridh Ormiston last Sunday night. Today it has over 140 supporters.
The area currently has three filling stations at Newtonmore, Grantown and Aviemore, all owned by Top 50 Indie MRH (GB).
Supporters of the Facebook campaign have described the prices at the three forecourts as “absolutely terrible” and, because there is no competition, they believe MRH is using its position to “charge what they like”. They are aware of their rural location but reckon Fort William is a more rural area and say fuel is cheaper there.
The campaign follows a public consultation with Tesco representatives in Aviemore last week. The grocery multiple hopes to build a new store in the town but said that a filling station was not part of its plans.
MRH managing director John Lynn, said: "MRH Aviemore is an attractive service station serving the needs of local consumers. We always trys to be competitive with local competition, but remote rural areas tend to have somewhat higher pump prices owing to higher logistics costs. However we are always trying to improve our buying prices, so we can generate value for consumers."
