Unmanned growth

A decline in petrol and diesel sales coupled with the desire to reduce costs is forcing Europe’s fuel retailers to convert service stations to unmanned sites, finds Verdict, part of the Datamonitor group. By 2013, one in 10 service stations across Europe won’t have any staff at the forecourt leaving motorists to pay for their fuel using automated payment technology.

Jonathan branches out

HIM research & consulting has appointed former Forecourt Trader of the Year Jonathan James as associate consultant with immediate effect. Jonathan, who runs stores under both the Budgens and Spar fascias, and is currently in the process of selling two of his four forecourts in the Cambridgeshire area, has been employed for his vast practical retail experience which fits with HIM’s aim to turn research and insight into action for its clients.

Property advice

RMI Petrol has appointed property firm Barber Wadlow as advisers to its members in all property-related matters.

The property advisory service is due to be launched by the RMI on October 7 and will enable its members to access Barber Wadlow’s wide knowledge and expertise. Services will range from acquisition and disposal advice, through to valuation (for all purposes), handling landlord and tenant matters and development advice to maximise value.

Subway benefits

Subway has been educating potential franchisees on the benefits of opening up on forecourts at an introductory seminar last month. Speakers included Mark Wilson, group operations manager for Top 50 Indie Fraser Group, who shared his first-hand knowledge and experience of the benefits of having a Subway at his site in Yarnton, Oxfordshire.
