Retailers need to review their signage and labelling or face hefty fines under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA), says labelling company Brother UK.

Under part three of the Act, which comes into force from October 1 this year, any business that provides a service to the public will have to ensure the disabled are catered for properly – or incur fines of up to £50,000.

Along with signage and labelling, physical features of buildings such as entrances and exits, toilet and washing facilities and door handles are affected.

With about two million people in the UK with serious sight problems, that constitutes a sizeable number of customers whose needs cannot be ignored.

Avoiding discrimination by providing clear labelling is possible by using particular font sizes, styles and letter cases.
