Spar’s Pentwyn forecourt store has successfully bucked the trend during the traditional January slump by replacing its festive display with a full S-Budget range, according to store manager Christine Lewis.

The 24-hour Spar store and service station in Cardiff took the initiative to create a full display of the fantastic value range, and in the first two weeks of January it saw sales of S Budget lines increase by 12 per cent compared the previous month.

Christine said: “You don’t normally think of a forecourt as carrying the S Budget range, but with B&M and Farmfoods next door we needed to think outside the box.

“We are aware our customers are very price conscious, especially early on in the year, so to stay as successful we need to always be one step ahead.

“Retailers need to stay ahead of the game and continually reassess their business, adjusting to accommodate business needs, which is what displaying the S-Budget range has done for us,” she said.

Charlie Henson, assistant manager, added: “We realised a long time ago that if you give the customer what they want and keep the store interesting they will keep coming back.

“As a result we provide a 7m chilled food offering, including a full 1m bay for fresh meat as well as a full 1.2m ambient produce bay. There is also a strong salad offering stored in chilled cabinets.”
