Robbers have attacked a young forecourt attendant on his first unsupervised shift, despite the shop being locked and only operating for fuel sales.
Two men burst through a skylight at the Worsted Filling Station off the A11 at Babraham, south of Cambridge, and beat the 26-year-old with broken snooker cues, demanding money.
He was hit across the head and shoulders several times during the attack, which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.
CCTV footage shows one of the men attempting to take cash from the till before escaping through the skylight while the worker tried to tackle the second man on the shop floor.
The robber who had fled came back into the store to help his friend – both hitting the shop worker with the cues.
The robbers then fled without taking anything.
Kandiah Thaya, manager of the petrol station, said: “He didn’t hear them in the roof and was so stunned when they came in that he couldn’t speak and before he could respond they attacked him with the sticks.
“He tried to keep one of them there, but he had lost a lot blood and was so tired from the assault that he had to let him go.
“He is quite shaken up and is now resting up at home.”
The petrol station attendant was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and received treatment for a large cut to his head and cuts on his face and hands.
The two men are described as white between the ages of 30 and 40. One was chubby with a beard.
Detective Sergeant Andy Denzey from Cambridgeshire Police said it was not known how the men got away from the scene.
He added: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of this filling station in the early hours of the morning to think if they saw anything that could help our inquiry. Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be very important.”
