The Subway brand has opened its third store in conjunction with Spar convenience store group Blakemore Retail, as part of an ongoing partnership between the two organisations.

The new store in Newport, South Wales, adds to the two existing Subways in Blakemore’s Newark and Shrewsbury-based sites.

There are also a further six Subway stores in development at Blakemore Retail Spar sites which will open by the end the year.

The Subway brand currently has more than 1,600 stores in the UK and Ireland, with more than 300 stores open or in development in non-traditional locations, such as within convenience stores or on forecourt sites.

Trevor Haynes, area development manager, Subway UK and Ireland, said: “We are delighted to be working with Blakemore Retail across its retail sector. It’s a great opportunity for the Subway brand to continue its expansion into key c-store locations and to offer customers calling in at Spar stores the choice of Subway subs, flatbreads and salads.

“We are seeing a great deal of demand for Subway stores within convenience stores and on forecourts at the moment. Due to their simple operations and minimal space and equipment requirements, our stores are uniquely suited to non-traditional sites.”

Blakemore Retail managing director, Geoff Hallam, said: “We are delighted to develop a new partnership with the Subway brand.

“Blakemore Retail is a leader in the UK convenience sector and we are constantly looking for innovative solutions to develop our stores and meet the needs of our ever evolving customer base.

“This partnership will allow two strong brands to work together for mutual benefit and the introduction of a Subway store, was a natural complement to our existing Spar c-store offer.”
