MP calls for cut in duty

Fuel retailers are being urged to write to their MPs to support an Early Day Motion put forward by Robert Halfon, the Conservative MP for Harrow. The EDM, posted on Tuesday, November 25, urges the Chancellor to cut fuel duty.

Illegal fuel site raided

A laundering plant capable of producing more than 16.4 million litres of illicit fuel a year and potentially evading around £10.6m in taxes and duty has been dismantled by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) after a raid in the Crossmaglen area of South Armagh. Officers from HMRC, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the Police Service of Northern Ireland seized 73,000 litres of fuel and found more than 20 tonnes of toxic waste at the site.

Fuel drives promotion

Sainsbury’s ran a deep discount promotion on fuel from Thursday, November 28 to Wednesday, December 4, offering shoppers who spent £60 or more a voucher to save 10p per litre off fuel. The retailer ran identical offers at the end of July and the first week in September.

Roof wrecked in fire

Five fire engines and around 30 firefighters tackled a blaze at the Esso petrol station shop on the A24 London Road at Dorking in Surrey. They were able to extinguish the blaze after about two and half hours, but the building’s roof was destroyed and two members of staff were treated for smoke inhalation.

Robbers steal £10,000

More than £10,000 has been stolen from a Hampshire petrol station after three men ram-raided their way into the building. The attack occurred early on Monday morning at the West End Service Station in Swaythling Road, Southampton. A cashier working on the night shift was left in shock but was not physically injured.
