Savings of up to 20ppl on Tesco fuel will be available to Clubcard users under a scheme which the retail giant is about to launch nationally, and will run into the summer.

Fuel Save has already been trialled in Wales and offers customers 2ppl off a single fuel transaction for each £50 spent in store or online. Savings can be redeemed straight away or accumulated with subsequent spending over a calendar month with a cap on the discount of 20ppl. Savings not used in the first month can be used any time during the subsequent month.

Unlike other fuel promotions, such as the 5ppl off with a £50 shop that Tesco sometimes runs, the savings are administered through the Clubcard rather than a paper voucher.

Fuel Save can also be used in conjunction with other Tesco fuel promotions. For instance, if a customer has a 5ppl off voucher, then these saving will be in addition Fuel Save and can take the combined discount above the 20ppl cap.

In Wales there were 116 Tesco stores involved in the trial and the savings could be redeemed at 44 Tesco petrol filling stations. In its terms and conditions Tesco says the offer will run to July 31

A Tesco spokeswoman said Fuel Save would be rolled out nationally, and although she could not reveal the date it was “imminent”.

In a presentation to investors Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke said the company would be spending less in developing new stores and instead would be investing in lower, more stable pricing. As part of this strategy he said the company would be investing £200m in every day low prices.
