Asda has been given the green light to build a new petrol forecourt close to the entrance to its store in Nuneaton.
Despite objections from residents, the supermarket giant’s plans were approved.
According to Nuneaton News, planning committee members were told that although the road it was being built in (Newtown Road) has issues with traffic, it is expected that 50% of the new petrol station’s customers would be existing Asda shoppers and 40% would be cars driving past.
A spokesman for Asda told councillors that a petrol station would help reduce the price of fuel in the area. He said: “Asda petrol stations can drive down petrol prices at almost one pence per litre.”
Nuneaton News reported that the application was approved by a vote of 10 to three and although most councillors were happy with the plans, some thought the design could have been better.
One described the planned development as a ‘bog standard garage’ and others agreed, saying it was a shame they could not have a better design. But another said he didn’t think people would be bothered because “every petrol station looks the same”.
