There has been a flurry of activity from Asda and Sainsbury’s with the supermarket giants developing new filling stations and upgrading existing ones.

Demolition work has started on the site of a former Shell service station and Londis store on Nags Head Hill in St George, Bristol, to clear the site for a new Sainsbury’s Local store and petrol station.

Planning permission for the demolition and redevelopment was granted by Bristol City Council in October last year, but now Sainsbury’s has put in a planning application for a new Sainsbury’s Local store, which will also include six petrol pumps..

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “If permission is granted we anticipate the new petrol station and store will be open in November.”

And next moth Sainsbury’s is planning to start demolition of the petrol station at its supermarket on London Road, Grantham, in Lincolnshire, as its begins upgrading its facilities.

Planning permission to replace the existing four-pump station and replace it with six pumps, a new kiosk and canopy was approved by South Kesteven District Council in May.

As well as increasing the number of pumps, work will be carried out to replace the existing double skin fibreglass tanks with improved fuel storage.

The new petrol station is scheduled for completion by the end of November

Meanwhile building work is due to begin new month on a new Asda petrol station at the site of its supermarket in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

The plans to knock down the former vehicle hire base in Newtown Road and build a brand new petrol filling station were approved in April.

Demolition is due to begin next month, with completion of the six-pump forecourt scheduled by December.

Asda is also almost ready to begin work on a new petrol station outside its Highbridge store in Sedgemoor, Somerset.

Sedgemoor District Council granted permission for an eight-pump petrol station at the Caxton Road store last November, and this week Asda submitted an application to the council for details including permission to display four non-illuminated canopy fascia signs and sign posts at the petrol station.

It is expected building work will be able to start by the end of the year.
