The big four supermarket groups marked New Year’s Day by cutting a further 2ppl from their petrol and diesel prices, with prices now having fallen by 19ppl and 15ppl respectively in less than four months.
Asda announced its new national price cap was 107.7ppl on unleaded petrol and 114.7ppl on diesel, its lowest fuel prices since summer 2010.
Andy Peake, Asda’s petrol trading director, said: “We’re pleased to be giving drivers some early New Year savings with Asda once again leading the way with our 13th price cut on fuel since September. No matter where customers live, they will benefit from the same fuel price with our national price cap of 107.7ppl for unleaded and 114.7ppl for diesel.
“While other supermarkets will follow the fuel price drop, Asda is the only retailer that has a national price cap on fuel at all 245 filling stations, ensuring every single one of our customers knows the maximum price they will pay at the pump regardless of where they live.”
Tesco said its cut was in addition to the savings available through Fuel Save. Tesco fuel director Peter Cattell added: “We’re dropping the cost of petrol by 2ppl and diesel by 2ppl at all of our 500 filling stations. That’s on top of the 6ppl average saving on petrol that ClubCard customers are currently getting thanks to our Fuel Save scheme. It means ClubCard customers can get the lowest price for petrol in the UK.”
Sainsbury’s said it was cutting fuel prices for the sixth time in five weeks. Avishai Moor, Sainsbury’s head of fuel, said: “From tomorrow we’re dropping the price of unleaded petrol and diesel by up to 2ppl. This is another way in which we can offer our customers real value for money when they fill up with Sainsbury’s on New Year’s Day.”
