Competition on fuel prices between the big four supermarkets ratcheted up another notch today (Monday January 12), and edged ever closer to £1 per litre on unleaded petrol, as all four announced another round of price cuts.
Asda beat the others to the punch on Twitter at 1.48am saying it would be cutting 2ppl from unleaded petrol and diesel effective from midday tomorrow.
This means its national price cap on unleaded will be 103.7ppl and 110.7ppl on diesel, and since September the price of unleaded has fallen 23ppl and diesel is down 19ppl.
Senior vice president Barry Williams said: “Asda once again are leading this next round of price cuts, our 15th cut on fuel since September. No matter where customers live, they will benefit from the same fuel price with our national price cap of 103.7ppl for unleaded and 110.7ppl for diesel.”
This was followed by Morrisons and Sainsbury’s which both said they were cutting 2ppl off diesel and unleaded tomorrow.
Sainsbury’s head of fuel Avishai Moor commented: “We always aim to offer our customers the best price on everything we sell and that’s why we are once again dropping the price of unleaded petrol and diesel by up to 2ppl at all our petrol stations. We know that fuel is a big expense and we are committed to helping our customers go further for less.”
Tesco was the last to make an announcement, but said its 2ppl cut would be effective from this afternoon.
Peter Cattell, fuel director for Tesco, said: “We’re dropping the cost of petrol and diesel by 2ppl at all of our 500 filling stations. That’s on top of the 6ppl average saving on petrol that ClubCard customers are currently getting thanks to our Fuel Save scheme. It means ClubCard customers can get the lowest price for petrol in the UK.”
