A37, England - November 2021

A hand car wash operation on the A37 near Shepton Mallet (Whitstone Hill to Fosse Way) is to be replaced with a four-pump forecourt and a 4,500sq ft convenience store following council approval.

Plans submitted by Peveril Securities Ltd in July 2021 have just been approved by Mendip District Council. The site is currently occupied by Gold Hand Car Wash and was previously known as the Wessex Filling Station.

In addition to the fuel pumps and shop, the site’s plans include six EV charging bays with a canopy, three jet wash bays, an air, water and vacuum bay plus 19 parking spaces.

Changes had to be made to the original plans including moving the shop away from the western boundary and implementing enhanced planting. There was also enhanced landscaping on the southern boundary to help to screen and integrate the development into its setting.

In approving the application, the case officer noted: “Considering the scope and scale of development and the associated economic benefits of job creation, the principle of development is considered acceptable in this case. “
