Handbag designer sets up Selfridges petrol station

28 August, 2015

The car park of London department store Selfridge’s will be transformed into a petrol station by handbag designer Anya Hindmarch, according to fashion website WMD.com.

The installation, which will open on September 11, will take its cues from Hindmarch’s autumn collection, which plays with the graphic signage and reflective surfaces of the UK’s motorways.

For the Selfridges project, Hindmarch has taken the M25 as her inspiration. She will equip the car park with black carpet printed with chevron stripes, install a car wash-themed photo booth and a kiosk selling air fresheners and bumper stickers, as well as a snack bar serving confectionery including KitKats and Yorkies.

Hindmarch explained: “There is something about being on the M25, with a clear road and the combination of lights, reflective surfaces and your favourite piece of music that can put you into a wonderful, safe, driving trance. I also love the graphic signage, with its purity and efficiency of message and the subtle humour that’s created when it’s used in an unexpected way.”

The space will feature Hindmarch’s autumn collection with prices from £40 for a bumper sticker through to £2,750 for an Ebury handbag in python.
