Service station provides village post office

03 February, 2016

A Yorkshire village post office has transferred to the local service station after the existing postmaster retired.

Richard Horseman ran the post office in Strensall village near York for 28 years and when he announced his retirement, retailers Maggie and Pete Wilson stepped forward to save the service.

The new modern post office – with extended opening hours – was officially opened at their Londis store and garage in the village on Monday February 1 by the retiring postmaster and the new team.

Maggie said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be taking on the running of the local post office from Richard and ensuring that the village keeps this essential service. Post offices are now in tea rooms, libraries and even pubs and we’re pleased to have it as part of our business. All our staff have been trained so that shoppers can get post office services at any time. Our opening hours are long and we work seven days a week, which is great news for busy customers.”

To accommodate the post office, the store has been fitted with a special counter and till area, as well as a safer route for pedestrians and improved parking outside the store. The store is located opposite Strensall Camp, a base for army medics from across the world, so will provide an essential service for personnel and families sending gifts abroad.

Londis director John Pattison said: “Londis stores are at the heart of local communities so they are perfectly placed to take on post office services where they are under threat. Maggie and Pete are well established retailers with an experienced team and I have no doubt that this new venture will be a success.”
