Bungling ram raiders steal empty ATM

10 February, 2016

A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a ram raid at the BP garage on the A134 in Sudbury, Suffolk, where a cashpoint machine was stolen.

Suffolk Police were alerted around 2.40am on Tuesday 9 February, to reports of a ram raid at the premises on the Chilton Industrial Estate.

Officers found the ATM had been taken, however the cashpoint machine was empty at the time and no cash was stolen.

The cashpoint machine was later located in Maldon in Essex and a 27-year-old man was arrested in the county on suspicion of burglary.

The filling station is part of the Barrett-Lee Garage and managing director Simon Barrett told the East Anglian Daily Times that two men had smashed in the front door and window of the shop before knocking the cash machine from the bolts holding it down.

He said: “They didn’t take anything apart from the cash machine which is always left open and empty overnight.

“However they have done a lot of damage to the shop front and the stock.

“It will cost several thousand pounds to repair and as we will have to be closed for a couple of days, it will also cost us through loss of trade.

“The annoying thing is that there’s so much damage and they haven’t even got anything out of it.”

Detectives are continuing enquiries into the incident and are asking anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area around this time or anyone with information about those involved to call Suffolk Police on 101, quoting CAD number 16 of Tuesday 9 February, or to call Crimestoppers, anonymously if required, on 0800 555111.

When a major car manufacturer like Ford predicts that sales of its electrified cars will outnumber petrol and diesel models by 2022, does that ring alarm bells about the possible speed of change for forecourts?
