Planning committee to visit proposed Asda forecourt site

01 July, 2016

Asda’s plans to add a forecourt to its Tonypandy supermarket in the Rhondda have so far attracted three letters of objection and a petition with 229 signatures. According to Walesonline.co.uk, this has led to members of Rhondda Cynon Taf council’s planning committee deciding to do a site visit on Monday, July 4.

Asda is hoping to gain full planning permission for the forecourt at the southern end of its existing car park. It would have three dispensers providing six self-service pumps and therefore no kiosk.

The supermarket’s application says provision for disabled customers would be available through a call/service point, while a ‘forecourt greeter’ would be available during busy times to assist all customers. Outside of these hours, support will be provided by the store’s staff.

Walesonline.co.uk reports that a 15.3m by 12.3m canopy, at 5.15m high, will give customers protection from the weather, while a control room will be built to house equipment.

The letters and petition state that there are already two petrol stations within a mile of the Asda so they don’t need another one. They also say the site would not create any jobs and is a poor use of the space.

However, the council’s service director for planning has recommended the application for approval.
