Aldi launches first petrol stations

06 July, 2009

Aldi has launched its first petrol stations offering cut price fuel. IGD Retail Analysis reported that the three trial sites in Austria had initially been selling diesel at 52 cents a litre. The petrol stations, located in the store car parks of the discount supermarket in the Salzburg area, were said to me unmanned, self-service facilities.

The petrol stations, which opened last week, were said to be offering the lowest prices seen on the continent for about three decades, with the cheap fuel sparking a price war and causing traffic jams all the way to Germany.

Prices had since increased, but remained about two cents below average.

A spokeswoman for Aldi said she was not aware of any plans for the company to open sites in the UK.
