UKPIA rural warning

The economics of petrol sales alone are not enough to ensure a sustainable future for rural petol stations, according to the UKPIA's recently published report 'Fuel Supply to Rural Filling Stations'. UKPIA also warned that rural sites were at risk due to the increasing cost of compliance with environmental legislation, both UK and EU. The report stated: "Changes or updates associated with infrastructure tanks, lines, pumps etc are often not viable for many sites... smaller sites struggle to justify the capital expenditure based on projected turnover and profitability levels.

HKS joins ACS

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has added two more forecourt operators to its retail membership. Leicester-based HKS Retail (pictured below), which is number 9 in our Top 50 Indies 2009 list, and Irish-based retailer Petrogas have both joined the association, which the ACS said now represented more than 33,500 stores. Meanwhile, Neil Turton, chief executive of Nisa-Today's, has been unanimously elected by the ACS board to become chairman.

AdBlue on the motorway

Moto Hospitality is to be the first motorway services in the UK to offer bulk dispensed AdBlue on its HGV forecourts. Air1 said it would supply AdBlue at the group's Chieveley and Wetherby sites, with more locations to follow. Moto retail director Tim Gittins said: "There has been a lot of interest from drivers and it is clear that this is a growing market."
