New upgrade work planned for family-run Tebay North services

21 January, 2011

Project management and design practice the Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP) has sealed a second contract with service station group Westmorland Limited.

FWP has been appointed by the family-run firm to deliver the next phase of improvement works at its flagship Tebay North services in Cumbria.

The practice is already driving the company’s ambitious £30 million vision to build the UK’s most eco-friendly and modern services on the M5 near Gloucester, helping to steer the project so far, successfully through the planning process.

FWP, which has offices in Preston and Manchester, will now manage the upgrade work at Tebay, which will see the northbound service area mirror the southbound services at the station, at the gateway to the North Lakes.

Its highly-acclaimed restaurant is being extended, kitchens will be upgraded and a new 'made to go' coffee shop will be created for its customers.

Work will be carried out in two phases. Phase 1 was successfully completed to programme and budget in December, phase 2 will be completed later this year.

Kate Shuttleworth, partner at FWP, said: “The new dining extension is to accommodate growing business and customer demands at the popular Westmorland Service Station.

“The idea is to upgrade the north side to improve the customer offer in line with the southern side.

“The scheme is also looking to enhance sustainability where possible and improve energy efficiency."

She added: “Tebay has grown from a modest farm diversification into something more than six times its former size and is nothing less than a local and regional institution.”

FWP is also hard at work delivering Westmorland’s vision for The Gloucestershire Gateway Motorway Services Area, near Gloucester.

The plan, which could generate up to 300 new jobs, was granted planning permission by Stroud District Council last summer.

FWP will manage the delivery of the UK's most innovative motorway service area as project and cost manager.

Its team is expert at coordinating the project team for major developments and keeping a tight control on budgets.

Kate Shuttleworth, partner at FWP, said: “Our experience at communicating and liasing closely with the client and the design team has been crucial in helping to steer this high profile scheme through the complex planning process.

“Our expertise in the leisure sector and our ability to manage multi-million pound projects will be a major factor in ensuring the project goes ahead and opens to the public on time and to budget.”
