Top 50 Indie Euro Garages has completed the redevelopment of Rivington Services on the M61. Previously called Bolton West Services. the £12.3m project represents the group's biggest investment to date.

The Blackburn-based group, which operates a portfolio of 70 freehold-owned sites, made the move into the motorway services market when it acquired the site previously voted as the worst in the UK from First in July 2009.

Much of the old northbound and southbound services have been demolished and the sites now feature glazed foodcourt areas, c-stores, high-street outlets such as Starbucks, Subway and Burger King, parking for over 170 vehicles, a large petrol forecourt, and a landscaped seating area.

Zuber Issa, chief executive of Euro Garages, said the completion of the redevelopment programme marks an exciting new milestone for the business.

"We acquired the site in 2009 as we recognised we had the opportunity to transform it into one of the UK's leading motorway services facilities," he said. "That potential has now been realised.

"Over 70,000 vehicles use the M61 everyday and as the only amenity on the motorway we know that Rivington Services will provide a welcome stop for passing motorists, whether they are commuters, holiday-makers or truck and coach drivers.

"What we have achieved at Rivington Services represents our commitment to providing quality offerings alongside excellent customer service and the site is a great addition to our portfolio."

In January 2000 Bolton West Services was used as the setting for a TV programme which parodied service stations by the comedian Peter Kay in That Peter Kay Thing.
