Brulines Fuel Solutions (BFS) has helped bring Europe's oldest working petrol station back to life, after a flooding problem caused the Riddelsdell Brothers petrol station to close to forecourt customers for the first time in its 112-year history.

The combination of a naturally high water table and unusually wet weather led to a serious flood at the site in Boxford, Suffolk, causing the concrete forecourt to crack and rise up to the point where health and safety concerns meant the fuel sales side had to close.

Owner Howard Watts said: "While fuel only represents a small amount of my income, it is an important draw for service customers. People coming in for their fuel then remember they are coming up to a service or an MOT and book their cars in there and then. We certainly noticed the difference when the pumps were closed, so getting up and running again as quickly as possible was extremely important."

After getting agreement from his insurance company, Howard called in BFS to not only carry out the repairs, but to upgrade the site at the same time, including refurbishing the four pumps, re-building all brick chambers, lining the four tanks, renewing all pipework and installing a new interceptor, an object the size and shape of a miniature submarine, to prevent fuel spills reaching the foul sewer.
