Forecourt Trader - 30 years at the heart of the fuel retailing community

Forum focuses on alcohol policy

16 January, 2013

The Government’s Alcohol Strategy will be top of the agenda at the Responsible Retailing Forum, being run by the Association of Convenience Store (ACS) on February 26.

The forum will be split into three sessions, with the first dedicated to the Alcohol Strategy and the measures that will affect retailers, including plans for minimum unit pricing and a proposal to allow local authorities to limit the number of off licences in an area.

Speaking in this session will be ACS public affairs director Shane Brennan and Federation of Wholesale Distributors chief executive James Bielby on the battle against duty fraud, and a panel of retailers will share their thoughts and examples of best practice on alcohol sales and licensing issues.

The second session will focus on how convenience stores can be a part of the next stage of the Alcohol Reponsibility, and speakers will include Chris Heffer, deputy director for drugs and alcohol at the Department of Health and Alan Hopley from addiction charity Addaction.

The final session will demonstrate the leadership role that retailers can play in their communities. Speakers in this session will show retailers how to be a positive voice in their local area, as well as giving an overview of local initiatives that have reduced alcohol harm and increased the provision of healthy food in communities across the UK.

ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “Convenience stores are facing sweeping changes to alcohol policy that will impact on their business in the coming year. This forum is an excellent opportunity for retailers to hearing form those involved in the detail of the Alcohol Strategy, as well as hearing essential tips on how to ensure your business is out in front of the changes coming your way.”

The Responsible Retailing Forum will take place on 26th February at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole between 10am and 4pm. Places are free to ACS members. To book a place contact Sophie Clarke on 01252 533007 or email sophie.clarke@acs.org.uk
