Forecourt Trader - 30 years at the heart of the fuel retailing community
Applegreen's Subway partnership kicks off with first forecourt opening
Published:  22 March, 2013

Subway has announced the opening of its first store in partnership with Ireland’s leading independent forecourt retailer, Applegreen. The store will open in one of Applegreen’s leading service station locations, Gorey, County Wexford, in the Republic of Ireland, with another site due to open in the UK next month.

As the world’s largest specialist sandwich provider, the Subway brand currently has more than 1,600 stores in the UK and Ireland, over 300 of which are open or in development in non-traditional locations, such as on forecourt sites or within convenience stores.

Gorey is the first store to open in partnership with Dublin-based Applegreen – which operates 100 sites in the UK and Ireland. The Applegreen service station spans 70 square metres of retail space, and serves the town of Gorey, the surrounding local area as well as tourist traffic throughout the summer months. The demand on the Gorey service station is high and the introduction of a Subway offer highlights the strength of the brand in the Irish quick-service restaurant market, and the ability to offer customers great value sandwiches, made fresh in front of them.

Trevor Haynes, area development manager, Subway UK and Ireland, said: “Since announcing the Subway brand’s partnership with Applegreen earlier this year we have been hard at work developing the site in Gorey ready for the first store opening. This is a very exciting time for the Subway brand, with a great deal of demand for Subway stores on forecourts and within convenience stores, the Gorey opening with Applegreen is the first of many in the pipeline.”

Adrian Grimes, head of food at Applegreen, said: “The opening of the Subway store in our Gorey service station location today is the beginning of Applegreen’s partnership with the Subway brand and we are very excited to see our planning come to fruition. Applegreen is well known for providing good value, high-quality food and coffee on the go. The Applegreen Food Team is constantly looking for innovative solutions to help our busy customers through their day. Therefore, with its convenient, fresh approach, a Subway store is a natural complement to our existing forecourt offer.”
