Spanish forecourt workers to strike

28 June, 2013

Strikes by petrol station workers in Spain are being planned for next month, according to English language news website Thinkspain.

It reports that negotiations between unions and industry bosses are deadlocked over issues such as the safety of service-station workers – particularly those on night shifts – failure to recognise length of service of employees and poor shift management, as well as travel and relocation problems and the need to increase wages.

According to the Labourers’ Commission (CCOO) and General Workers’ Union (UGT), staff at petrol stations across Spain have not had a pay rise, even in line with inflation, for six years.

Although some, limited progress was made at the last meeting, the matters raised are mostly at stalemate as service-station bosses refuse to budge, say the UGT and CCOO.

As a result, a series of strikes affecting petrol stations throughout the country will be staged in July. The precise dates of these have not been announced.
