"Incredible" rampage on forecourt

03 July, 2013

A man’s drunken rampage in a Halifax BP forecourt store was described as “incredible” and “absolutely amazing” by a shocked magistrate.

A report in the Halifax Courier said that Craig Derrick pleaded guilty to criminal damage at the BP Undercliffe Service Station, racial assault of the shop assistant and assault of a police officer when he appeared in Calderdale Magistrates’ Court.

The incident happened at around 12.30am on April 7 when Derrick got out of a taxi on the way back from a party and punched the garage window before entering the shop. He is then said to have racially abused the shop assistant before throwing a plastic bottle in his face.

The court was shown CCTV footage of the attack, showing Derrick rampaging across the shop for 10 minutes, throwing around £200-worth of packets of crisps, magazines and sweets on the floor. His wife tried to stop him, but he pushed her over.

Police arrived and put Derrick into a police car, but he tried to escape then punched one of the officers in the face and kicked him in the back of the head. Officers had to use a taser gun to restrain him.

Derrick’s solicitor said Derrick had been encouraged to have a drink at the party, when he doesn’t usually drink alcohol.

After seeing the CCTV footage, chair of the magistrates Peter Alexander said: “Rarely am I shocked but that was incredible, absolutely amazing. It seemed to go on and on and on.”

Derrick will appear at Bradford Crown Court later this month.
