Retailers urged to seek MP support for EDM calling for further cut in fuel duty

26 November, 2013

Robert Halfon

Fuel retailers are being urged to write to their MPs to support the Early Day Motion put forward by Robert Halfon, the Conservative MP for Harrow.

The EDM, posted on Tuesday, November 25, states: “That this House welcomes the Government's actions cutting fuel duty in 2011 and the freeze in fuel duty until the end of the present Parliament announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer; and urges the Government, if the economic conditions allow, to continue to cut costs for hard-pressed motorists and to consider a further fuel duty cut.”

Robert Halfon has long campaigned for lower fuel duty welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement at the Conservative Party conference in September that fuel duty would be frozen for the rest of the current Parliament, if the money is available.

He said at the time that it was fantastic news for motorists, and “comes after a long campaign that I have been running since I was elected as an MP to keep fuel duty down”.

“This shows that the Government is really focused on the cost of living. It is now up to the oil companies to pass these savings onto motorists.”
