PRA members urged to lobby MPs over plain packs

16 April, 2014

PRA members are being urged by the association to lobby their MPs against government proposals to introduce plain packaging on tobacco.

The call comes after the Chantler Review, which was set up by the Government to look into the issue, came out in favour of plain packaging.

Priti Patel MP, who is chair of the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group, has written to PRA chairman Brian Madderson to emphasise that there is still an opportunity for shopkeepers to influence the government’s final decision.

In her letter she said: “I understand that there will be a further six week consultation when the draft regulations are published and I have been in touch with the Secretary of State for Health to ask for further information about the consultation and when it will begin.

“I am also in contact with Ministers in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Treasury and Home Office about the implications of plain packs for small shops, tax revenues and smuggling.”

She appealed to PRA members to lobby their MPs to object to the recommendations.

She added that they could also invite their MPs to visit them to see for themselves the work that they do to prevent underage sales and the impact that plain packs would have on their businesses.
