Vehicles seized over dodgy diesel

09 May, 2014

Two vehicles have been seized by police and customs officials in Rotherham after an investigation into diesel thefts.

The seizures came after police carrying out inquiries at an address found containers which appeared to have remnants of red diesel inside, as well as two diesel-fuelled road vehicles.

Officers from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) were then called to assist and inspect these vehicles, which were found to contain red diesel in the fuel tanks.

As a result a black Vauxhall Insignia and a grey Landrover Freelander were seized, and returned on payment of £1,466 in restoration fees and charges.

Acting detective sergeant Andrew Shaw said: “This is a fantastic example of partnership working between South Yorkshire Police and our partners from Revenue and Customs.

“We welcome and appreciate their assistance in relation to enforcement of this instance of fuel duty avoidance.

“This incident should serve as a warning to people who flout the law and use red diesel.

“People who use red diesel can cause damage to their vehicles’ engine, and may also be supporting and encouraging criminality and organised crime.

“Theft of red diesel is not a victimless crime. We appeal to the public to report anyone who they believe uses red diesel to Revenue and Customs on 0800 595000.”

Three men have been arrested in relation to the fuel theft and have been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
