A man was seriously injured after being stabbed at a MRH-owned BP service station in Downfields, near Soham, Cambridgeshire.

Police were called to the site in Fordham Road at around 2.20pm on September 5, after receiving reports that a man had been stabbed inside the forecourt's Spar store.

It is believed a customer was standing by the sandwich chiller when an older man walked up to him and stabbed him in the side.

The injured man went to the till for help and his assailant dropped the knife and waited in the aisle until the police arrived. A police spokesman said a 48-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Parkside Police Station in Cambridge.

An air ambulance attended the site within 10 minutes and the injured man was taken by land ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Detective Sergeant John Yore, who is based at Ely station, said: "The man was stabbed inside the shop while it was busy with people both inside and outside on the garage forecourt.

"He suffered a serious stab wound to his upper body, although I am told he is not in a life-threatening condition."

A 48-year-old man from Soham has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The site was closed while scene of crime officers carried out their enquiries, but was able to reopen by 5.30pm.
