Join the battle royal

The Forecourt Trader of the Year Award will be presented at a glittering ceremony at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane on Thursday, September 15, along with many other awards, which recognise the high standards of operation in the fuel retailing sector. But as the nation dusts down its flags to prepare for the Euros, the Olympics and the Queen's birthday, will you also be celebrating a moment in the spotlight?

King of the road

This month sees the launch of the Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards 2016. Celebrating its 20th birthday this year, the awards have long been established as the showcase for the petrol retailing industry recognising and rewarding those businesses at the leading edge of their profession that continue to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

Best oil company initiative: winner

Listen. Analyse. Act. This is the premise of Shell's successful Tell Shell: UK Voice of the Customer programme. The aim of the initiative was to increase customer satisfaction. Customer feedback was gathered through the use of Tell Shell cards, newsletters and voice-of-the-customer analytics. Shell used it to create a Customer Charter, which comprises four pillars of service: treated like a guest; quick and easy; clean and bright; and everything works.

Best oil company initiative: highly commended

Jet believes its heritage is one of its greatest strengths and so wanted to celebrate its 60th anniversary in style.

Retailer champion

he Westmorland Family's managing director/finance director Laurence King beat off stiff competition from Peter Bellini, Clive Sheppard, David Penny, Sharad Raja, and Raj and Aziz Patel to be named Forecourt Trader's Retailer Champion. Best motorway services

Gloucester Services on the M5 is a motorway services area like no other. It has two aims: to make local, quality food accessible and affordable, and to inject investment back into the surrounding community. So, instead of the usual franchises and fast food outlets, visitors find a farm shop stocked with locally produced food, a butchery featuring Gloucestershire's finest meat, and a kitchen serving home-made dishes, made from locally sourced ingredients. To achieve this, owner Westmorland works with over 130 local suppliers within 30 miles of the services as well as 70 producers from further across the South West.

Best valeting facilities

Highworth Filling Station's state-of-the-art Aquashine-branded valeting area offers customers a car wash, two jet washes, two vacuums and two air water towers.
