The oil company quizzed more than 2,000 drivers and found many had bad habits and were willing to push the boundaries of the Highway Code if it meant they’d save time and money.
Nearly half the drivers questioned said they would park on a double yellow line if they had an urgent letter to post and the post office was closing in five minutes. Meanwhile a quarter of drivers said they’d risk points on their licence and a fine by racing past a speed camera if they were going to be late for a job interview.
Men and younger drivers were found to be the most unscrupulous drivers, however when asked if they’d drive down the hard shoulder of a motorway to avoid missing a flight, it was the over-60s who scored highest.
Total UK’s retail marketing manager Stephanie Lumley commented: “The survey was a light-hearted look at how far drivers are willing to push the boundaries in everyday life but on a more serious note, the results reflect a shift in the way we now live with longer working hours and hectic lifestyles meaning time is perceived as a valuable commodity.”
