A Tesco petrol station in Dundee had to be evacuated after firefighters covered the area in foam to prevent an outbreak of fire following a fuel leak.

Firefighters were called to the Tesco Kingsway station at 8.51am on Tuesday January 26 to deal with the incident which occurred while a fuel tanker was filling up the tanks.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fuel system had been over pressurised and because of this it caused the fuel to leak at the pumps and the tanker bay.”

He added that the petrol station was evacuated and the staff were taken to a place of safety.

One unit from the nearest fire station attended together with a specialised unit from Forfar as well.

Crew manager Gavin Brown said: “The crew dealt with the situation and passed the responsibility of the site back to Tesco. We advised them not to re-open the site until further notice.”
