Exel, the supply chain management company, is using Secureseal tamper-proof seals on the trailers it uses to deliver goods to 365 BP forecourt stores.

Secureseal is a permanent re-usable seal with a unique random security number generator that records unauthorised door openings.

Exel’s transport manager, Lee Silvester, explained: "Protection of goods in transit is crucial to BP Retail as its forecourt stores are replenished with fresh food every day. Secureseal is part of a whole series of systems that protects that supply. BP Retail wanted a system that would not be dependent on the driver and Secureseal is easy to use and works well.

"The mechanical seals are very robust and since they do not rely on batteries, are expected to last for the lifetime of the vehicle."

Secureseal has been fitted to the Exel-operated rigids and articulated trailers. Trailer doors can only be opened under supervision with the randomly-generated seal numbers recorded at each location.

Appointed by BP Retail last year, Exel manages the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week distribution of chilled and ambient goods to BP forecourts.

It has established a dedicated national distribution centre at Magna Park near Lutterworth, to provide warehouse and distribution management services for BP.
