Roadchef has renewed its contract with waste and recycling company UKWSL.

The £4.5m deal means UKWSL will be responsible for Roadchef’s waste and recycling services at 22 of its 30 sites for a further five years.

The two companies have been working together since 2015, and UKWSL says that in the past five months alone, it has achieved a reduction in spend of more than £50,000 for Roadchef, its total saving aspiration for the entire year.

The waste company says it has also introduced an major reduction in the use of on-site compactor machines.

Previously machines were operated on a standard weekly run, but following analysis by UKWSL, it was discovered that fortnightly runs would suffice for the majority of Roadchef sites, most of the time.

The is resulted in savings on collections, and in turn minimised environmental impact by reducing the carbon footprint of vehicle operations.

UKWSL’s remit has also been extended on a trial basis to include grounds maintenance in addition to the traditional waste and recycling services.

In the trial UKWSL has been using coffee grounds from their three internal composters to fertilise the grounds of the service areas.

Commenting on the partnership, Roadchef’s director of purchasing and data, Mike Jackson, said: “Waste management is a complicated process for our business due to the volume of visitors at our sites. We’re delighted to be working with UKWSL who have demonstrated an excellent understanding of our business and our recycling requirements.”

Max Kanda, managing director of UKWSL, added: “After a very successful couple of years, we are delighted to be partnering with Roadchef once more and have in place an ambitious plan to further increase their recycling rates and reduce their waste to landfill. Our working relationship has been exemplary to date and we feel confident that this collaborative approach will serve us well as we expand the range of services we provide.”
