Roadchef has renewed its contract with waste and recycling company UKWSL. The £4.5m deal means UKWSL will be responsible for Roadchef’s waste and recycling services at 22 of its 30 sites for a further five years.

The two companies have been working together since 2015, and UKWSL says that in the past five months alone, it has achieved a reduction in spend of more than £50,000 for Roadchef, its total saving aspiration for the entire year.

It has also introduced a major reduction in the use of on-site compactor machines. Previously machines were operated on a standard weekly run, but it was discovered that fortnightly runs would be okay for most sites, most of the time. This resulted in savings on collections and minimised environmental impact by reducing the carbon footprint of vehicle operations.

UKWSL’s remit has also been extended on a trial basis to include grounds maintenance. In the trial, UKWSL has been using coffee grounds from their three internal composters to fertilise the grounds of the service areas.

Roadchef’s director of purchasing and data, Mike Jackson, said: "We’re delighted to be working with UKWSL who have demonstrated an excellent understanding of our business and our recycling requirements."
