Christopher Lord doesn’t have a fear of flying as he has actually learnt to fly, but he does fear not being invited to the party!

Career history: apprentice light vehicle maintenance technician (mechanic to you and me), mechanic, assistant service manager, shop manager, director. This is moot personally, as it’s all at the family firm.

Dream job (if you weren’t doing this): pilot or sailor. Small vessels in either though. I don’t like the big things, too boring.

What would you like to drive: Bugatti Veyron, but just once will do!

Perfect day: climb a decent hill in the morning, have an outdoor meal and then hit the water until the light runs out.

Favourite team: in football it’s Newcastle, although I still don’t know why. As for the sports I actually watch, it’s normally just the national team. Ferrari in Formula One is a certainty though.

Favourite read: Good Omens by Terry Prachett and Neil Gaiman.

Favourite film: Inception.

Best holiday: I am going to predict the future and say the one to the Forest of Dean this month. Otherwise it was the last trip to America in 2001, it was such a fascinating experience.

Possessions you couldn’t do without: my insoles. I have completely flat feet and a lot of my day is spent on them. Just one day without the insoles is felt for many days after.

Most likely to say: "Let’s try it, great idea!"

Least likely to say: "No, that’s not for sale."

Greatest achievement: Learning to fly.

Greatest fear: not being invited to the party.

Tips for business success: keep turning up, be kind and don’t give up.

Best business advice you’ve received: It’s all about profit, not turnover.

Best thing about your job: being able to make real change happen.

Most recent business achievement of note: being nominated for a retail award.

Pet hate: overselling. Just be honest with me, I would rather that than the difficult and abrasive conversation after an overselling failure.

Thoughts on the forecourt sector: Change is coming, slowly. Food is king but Brexit is a risk to all of us. You don’t need to spend £1m to be the best at what you do. I am worried as to when the next merger is going to happen and who is going to be left.

Three words to describe yourself: honest, positive and calm.
