This month marks the 10th anniversary of the first independent cash ATM being installed in the UK. The cash machine was installed by Bank Machine in a Spar store in Birmingham, creating a market that it says has been one of the fastest growing of the last decade.
Commenting on the anniversary, Ron Delnevo, managing director of Bank Machine, said: “Bank Machine pioneered this industry a decade ago and remains at the forefront today. We will continue our expansion with more machines in 2009, adding to our existing 2,500 machines including more free ATMs at military bases, hospitals and universities as well as our innovative £5 only machines.”
Before December 1998, all of the estimated 25,000 cash machines in the UK were installed and operated by the banks. According to Delnevo, there are now about 64,000 ATMs, with many of those operated by the independent sector.
Delnevo said: “We were the first to recognise the need for free to use ATMs in low-income areas, installing a machine in Blackbird Leys, Oxfordshire way back in 2006.”
