Motorists were left stranded on the M1 after filling up at a service station where an unleaded fuel tank had been filled with diesel.
Vehicles littered the forecourt of the BP site at the Welcome Break Service Station at junction 21 of the M1, after filling up with the wrong fuel. Others broke down on the slip-road to the north-bound carriageway, while others spluttered to a halt further up the motorway.
A BP spokesman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused to motorists and we will be talking to drivers who have contacted us about compensation to repairs to their vehicles.”
