Forecourt retailer Shailesh Parekh came third in the General Election voting for the Hodge Hill constituency in
Birmingham. Shailesh, who owns Molineux Service Station in Wolverhampton, stood as a Conservative parliamentary candidate. He told Forecourt Trader: "I never thought I’d win but I did increase the Tory vote from around 3,800 last time to 4,936 this time. I’d definitely do it again." He was trounced by Labour’s Liam Byrne who got just over 22,000 votes. Shailesh, (featured in May 2010 issue), said he would relish a job in the Department of Trade & Industry so he could represent entrepreneurs and small businessmen more fairly.
Meanwhile, Philip Dunne, who spoke at Forecourt Trader’s Top 50 Indies dinner in March and has been helping retailers fight rating assessments by the Valuation Office Agency, romped to victory in the General Election. He held his Tory seat for Ludlow after gaining nearly 26,000 votes.
