Site with a licence to sell Alcohol Forecourt trader

The award for the best site with a licence to sell alcohol is always hotly contested, but Spar Bluebell Way in Preston, Lancashire, edged ahead with its well-balanced, comprehensive and disciplined alcohol offer.

The store makes good use of a walk-in chiller, keeping white, rosé and sparkling wines at the perfect temperature. The extensive range of beers, cider, perry and real ales is clearly blocked and ready to drink, and the section is complete with red wines from around the world and the best-selling spirits.

Winner Michelle Hall (pictured alongside awards host Mark Durden-Smith (far left), with store manager Jane Fowler, and Forecourt Trader ad manager James Bush), says: "The department is designed for customers products can be quickly found from a comprehensive range, ready to consume and supported with impulse products to offer a complete solution, featuring events and themes to create interest."

car Care & Lubricants Outlet - sponsor Convenience Distribution Group

The car care and lubricants category at Newton Park Service Station in Coatham Mundeville, County Durham, offers an amazing range of great brands with good use of point of sale.

The fixture is well categorised and covers impulse, distress and valeting products. A key factor in the site’s success was the helpfulness of staff in deciphering the extensive line-up of lubricants on behalf of customers.

Manageress Christine Glenn (pictured next to awards host Mark Durden-Smith (far left), alongside site owner Nick Baker, and Graham Tissiman, sales and marketing manager of category sponsor Convenience Distribution Group), says: "We have a display packed with everything you could think of. It’s a long section of the store and we have a separate gondola end for seasonal offers. At this time of year we have all the de-icers and other products for the winter season."

best Display of Chilled Food - sponsor Ginsters

As well as scooping the overall award in the main route category, Spar Brackenvale in Carryduff, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland, also came up trumps in the award for best display of chilled food.

Fresh and chilled is a huge part of the store, with a multitude of chillers tempting customers at every turn. All the chillers feature clean, well-merchandised displays with an extensive choice. Cross-merchandising is also a strong focus of the chilled category, helping to maximise impulse purchase opportunities.

Manager Gary Brady (pictured, centre, with Ginsters’ channel controller for fuel and travel Phil Eastham (far right), and awards host Mark Durden-Smith), says the winning formula is having a strong local produce offer. "Customers really want to see locally sourced fresh foods alongside big brands because it gives them an alternative. Fresh participation is around 40% of all store sales and we make sure we give good value for money."
