Supermarket fuel sweep

Morrisons has trumped Tesco’s current 10ppl fuel price promotion with a new deal giving motorists 15ppl off petrol or diesel when they spend £60 in store. Customers who take part and fill up with a typical tank of £50 of fuel should receive savings of more than £5. The ’Fuel Britannia’ vouchers were issued from February 23 to March 4, and can be redeemed until March 11.

The AA has launched an Eco Driving App, which could help motorists improve their driving techniques and save an average of 10-20% on fuel bills. According to a recent AA/Populus poll, 76% of motorists are cutting down on car journeys and cutting back on other expenditure such as eating out or the weekly shop due to rising fuel costs.

Planning fight

The business community in the Scottish town of Newton Stewart, has vowed to fight plans for a new supermarket on the edge of town, the Galloway Gazette has reported. The newspaper said the majority of the 60-plus business people who attended a meeting of the Newton Stewart Business Association last month were against the development of a 30,000sq ft superstore with parking for 160 vehicles and a petrol station just off the A75 at Barnkirk.

New Road Service Station in Wiltshire has transformed the site of an old World War One Nissan hut into a Budgens convenience store with Murco-branded forecourt and a Post Office. It took owner Brendan Smith two years to complete the revamp in Codford St Mary, through his own efforts and by using local building trade suppliers to do the structural build, flooring and also installing solar panels that allow them to generate some of their own power.
