Supermarket groups have sparked fears of a price war on fuel after two rounds of price cutting, started by Sainsbury’s before the Budget.

However, AA head of public affairs, Paul Watters, pointed out the fall reflected the drop in wholesale costs adding: "Many non-supermarket fuel stations started undercutting supermarket prices a fortnight ago."
