Many retailers suffered an unpleasant surprise last month when back charges on their BP/Shell transactions were suddenly taken from their accounts following the ending of Rontec’s polling contract with GB Oils on March 31 (see Service Centre, May 2013 issue, link below).

Sheila Gee’s Gulf (former Total) site at Wednesbury in the West Midlands was expecting a £7,000 payment from Rontec for BP/Shell card transactions, but instead had £5,500 in back charges deducted.

PRA chairman Brian Madderson confirmed the situation had been a "bombshell" for many independent retailers.

Ramsay MacDonald, retail director of GB Oils, said a programme to launch an alternative card platform for dealers had been accelerated and would be in place and operational by mid-summer. "In the meantime, we are working alongside Rontec to seek to ensure that our dealers have a fuel card and card polling facility."
