Symonds Retail, winner of Forecourt Trader of the Year 2012 and Best Forecourt Loo 2013, has now added Independent Retail Chain of the Year to its trophy cabinet following this week’s Grocer Gold Awards 2013.

The glitzy event, organised by Forecourt Trader’s sister publication The Grocer, took place at London’s Guildhall, and was hosted by TV presenter Patrick Kielty.

Top 50 Indie Symonds Retail, based in Somerset, has nine forecourt sites, branded BP, Shell, Texaco or Jet. Its stores operate under the Budgens or Londis fascias, and as a group it serves 60,000 customers a week.

The Grocer Gold Award judges, chaired by The Grocer editor Adam Leyland, were impressed by the group’s increased turnover - up 33% to £43m, with profits up 126%, particularly in the light of intense competitive pressure from nearby supermarkets. They were also impressed by Symonds’ work with local producers and its strong management training programme.
