Sainsbury’s is the third of the big four supermarkets this week to announce it is cutting its fuel prices, and it will be introducing the deepest cuts.
From Friday 27 September, it will be cutting the price of unleaded petrol by up to 6 pence per litre (ppl) and diesel by up to 4ppl. Customers will pay no more than 129.9ppl for unleaded and 136.9ppl for diesel across Sainsbury’s 286 forecourts.
In previous cuts announcements Sainsbury’s has referred only to the amount it was reducing prices by and not mentioned any price ceiling. However, a spokesman said this latest announcement did not represent a change of policy, and Sainbury’s would continue to apply regional pricing to ensure it was competitive in local markets.
Richard Crampton, Sainsbury’s head of fuel, commented: “We want our customers to benefit from the recent drop in the wholesale price of fuel. Fuel is a big part of the weekly budget for many households so we hope this cut will be welcomed by drivers across Britain.”
On Monday Adsa announced that it had set a new minimum national price on petrol and diesel of 131.7ppl and 137.7ppl respectively, while on Tuesday Tesco said it was cutting up to 2ppl from unleaded and 1ppl from diesel. In addition Tesco is offering a voucher giving 5ppl off fuel for customers spending £50 in a week-long promotion ending on Sunday 29 September.
